Google Gmail

  • Vendor: Google
  • Version: Gmail
  • Release Date: Oct. 23, 2008
  • Emojis: 79

Google released an original set of 79 animated emoji characters for Gmail on 2008-10-23. Designed by Ryan Germick and Susie Sahim, this set was known internally at Google as goomoji. These unique designs were implemented following Gmail's initial emoji support in Japan, which used images from au by KDDI.

66 of the 79 emojis in this set map directly to the first emoji code points added to Unicode 6.0. The remaining 13 emojis were added to Unicode in subsequent years.

Implemented using Private Use Area code points, these have been mapped to their modern Unicode code points for display here.

About Google Emojis

Google emoji images are used on most Android devices, Gmail Web Interface, Google Meet, and ChromeOS. These are provided as part of the Noto Emoji project. These images are also used for Slack on non-Apple platforms including Windows, Linux, and Android.

Gboard also includes an emoji mashup feature known as Emoji Kitchen which allows two emojis to be combined into a sticker. Thousands of combinations are available, using Gboard for Android.

Note: Samsung devices use distinct emoji images. WhatsAppFacebook and Twitter use their own emoji images on Android, while Signal and Telegram for Android use Apple emoji images.
